While instantly attractive, the works in Pattie Lee Becker’s Botanicals series also embed stories in the details, transforming a collection of plants into a fantastical landscape on paper. On closer inspection, what seems to be a simple plant has eyes and lips and hosts a miniature community, where houses rest upon the leaves. Other plants appear to have sprouted arms and legs. In drawing, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, and even a collection of dolls, Becker’s body of work is consistently inventive. Her work frequently responds to personal stories, events, or emotion in kaleidoscopic color and shape.
