Flowers as the world had never seen them! With nuanced coloration and a rare quality of light, Kazumasa Ogawa created hand-colored collotypes of flowers native to Japan. A pioneer in photolithography, he opened his country’s first collotype printing studio, where he made and published some of the most significant photographic work of his era. His images appealed to viewers at home and in the newly accessible West and proved influential in the history of photography. Ogawa’s floral pictures were often presented in editioned albums. Produced with care between 1887 and 1897, many of this calendar’s 12 floral selections hail from Some Japanese Flowers, an original of which is in the collection of Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
